EL CAMINO RANCH

El Camino Ranch in Redlands, CA, is open under new ownership and management! The ranch now offers riding lessons in all disciplines, horse training, trail riding, and horse boarding. For the summer of 2017, the Riding Academy will be hosting five week-long day camps and four two-day camps for riders of all levels. Facilities include two lighted arenas and a covered round pen. Six barns, including in-and-outs with swamp coolers, and multiple covered paddock-barns provide a wide-range of boarding options. Joleen Hales, owner and operator, was born in Pennsylvania with an immediate fascination for horses. She moved at a young age to Southern California where she remained until 1992. She then moved to Dallas, Texas and began raising her own horses, and later relocated to Oklahoma to take advantage of their state racing program incentives.

We asked experts and parents of horse-loving kids for pointers on how to choose a horse-riding camp .. long the way, we found out why families are thankful for the lessons learned from time spent with equine friends.

Teenager Sophie Wilsdon, who now owns her own horse, shares what she’s gained from horse camp: Over the years, she says, “I’ve learned about deadlines and responsibility, how to treat animals and people with respect, and that hard work pays off.”

AMBER LENTZ: A GREAT HORSEWOMAN AND ROLE MODEL

On February 1, 2017 the Southern California horse community lost a great horsewoman and role model, Amber Lentz, following a prolonged battle with ovarian cancer. Amber was 39 at her passing at City of Hope, in Duarte, CA.

As a co-founder and primary driving force behind the Andalusian World Cup, she leaves behind an uncommonly weighty legacy by all standards. However, factoring in her age and the struggles she faced throughout her life, Amber’s accomplishments are all the more remarkable.
